Мореплавание — одно из древнейших коллективных занятий, достоинства которого прекрасно сформулировал византийский историк Георгий Пахимер:
Мореплавание — благородное дело, полезное человечеству как никакое другое. Оно помогает сбыть излишки и восполнить недостачу, осуществить невозможное. Оно объединяет жителей разных земель и любой негостеприимный остров может присовокупить к материку, оно обогащает мореплавателя знаниями, оно учит манерам, оно несет людям согласие и цивилизацию, оно укрепляет дух, выявляя в человеке все самое человеческое.[1826]
Выгоды мореплавания распределяются не так равномерно, как предполагал Пахимер, но у нас есть все основания считать, что большинство хотя бы подспудно с этим оптимистичным утверждением согласится. Сегодня, спустя восемь веков, мы добавляем к нему общемировую заботу о море и растущее осознание, что история мореплавания может послужить источником бесценных знаний о мире и о самих себе.
