One of the towers had completely disappeared in bright flames by now. Inside the castle, the air was filled with smoke and the sound of running feet and sword-fighting. The floors were wet with the blood of the wounded and the dead. In this confusion, Cedric rushed around with Gurth looking for Rowena. When he found her, he left her in the care of Gurth and ran on to try to find Athelstane.

Wamba and Athelstane had already made their escape (Вамба и Ательстан уже сбежали; escape — бегство, побег; to make one's escape — сбежать) and were standing in the courtyard of Torquilstone (и стояли во внутреннем дворе Торкилстона). "Come back here, false-hearted Templar! Let her go!"

"Dog!" said the Templar, turning his horse around. He stood up in his stirrups and struck Athelstane on the head with his sword.

"Ha (ага)! That is what happens to anyone (вот что случается с каждым) who challenges a Templar (кто бросает вызов рыцарю храма)!" he shouted (закричал он). "Those who want to save themselves, follow me (те, кто хочет спастись, следуйте за мной)!"

He led his men through the rain of arrows (он повел своих людей сквозь град: «дождь» стрел; rain — дождь; потоки), across the floating bridge and over to the barbican (через плавучий мост и к навесной башне).

He led his men through the rain of arrows, across the floating bridge and over to the barbican.

"De Bracy! De Bracy!" the Templar shouted when he reached the barbican (тамплиер закричал, когда он достиг навесной башни). "Are you here (ты здесь)?"

"I am here (я здесь)," replied De Bracy, "but I am a prisoner (но я пленник)."

"Can I rescue you (могу ли я освободить тебя)?"

"No, I have surrendered (нет, я сдался), rescue or no rescue (на милость победителя). Save yourself (спасай себя). Put the sea between you and England (помести море между собой и Англией = беги за море из Англии)! I dare not say any more (я не смею сказать ничего больше)."

He rode off into the forest (он ускакал в лес; to ride), closely followed by his men (и /близко/ за ним следовали его люди; closely — близко; тесно, плотно).

The money, armour and other treasures (деньги, доспехи и другие ценности; treasure — сокровища; драгоценность, ценный предмет) which they had taken from Front-de-Boeuf's castle (которые они забрали из замка Фрон-де-Бёфа) had been thrown into a great pile under the tree (были свалены в большую кучу под деревом; pile — куча, груда, штабель).
