Suddenly, the two men heard the sound of horses from among the trees behind them. A group of men came riding up to the swineherd and the jester. The first was the rich Prior Aymer, riding on a fat mule. Behind him came Brian de Bois-Guilbert, a Norman knight, who rode a big strong horse. He wore chain-mail under a red robe with the white cross of a Templar on it. He was followed by several cruel-looking Arab servants carrying his lance and shield.

"Can you tell us the way to Cedric the Saxon (можете ли вы указать нам дорогу к Седрику Саксу; to tell — говорить, сказать; сообщать)?" the Prior asked Gurth and Wamba (приор спросил у Гурта и Вамбы). "It is getting dark (темнеет; to get — получить; становиться, делаться; dark — темный) and we need somewhere to stay for the night (и нам необходимо где-нибудь остановиться на ночь; to stay — останавливаться, делать паузу; останавливаться, жить, гостить)."

"The road isn't easy to find (дорогу нелегко найти), and Cedric goes to bed very early (и Седрик ложится спать очень рано; bed — кровать, постель, ложе; to go to bed — ложиться спать)," answered Gurth (ответил Гурт).

"Don't argue with us, slave (не спорь с нами, раб)!" shouted the Templar angrily (закричал тамплиер гневно; angry — рассерженный, сердитый; разгневанный) and was about to strike Gurth (и собрался ударить Гурта; to be about to do smth. — собираться, намереваться сделать что-либо).

"Can you tell us the way to Cedric the Saxon?" the Prior asked Gurth and Wamba. "It is getting dark and we need somewhere to stay for the night."

"The road isn't easy to find, and Cedric goes to bed very early," answered Gurth.

"Don't argue with us, slave!" shouted the Templar angrily and was about to strike Gurth.

The Prior quickly stopped the Templar (приор быстро остановил тамплиера/храмовника).

"Now, brother (ну же, брат; brother — брат; брат, член религиозного братства)," he said to the Templar, "you must not think that you are still in Palestine (вы не должны думать, что вы все еще в Палестине)!"

With a silver coin in his hand (с серебряной монетой в руке), the Prior turned to Wamba instead (приор обратился к Вамбе вместо этого; to turn — поворачивать; to turn to smb. — обращаться к кому-либо).

"Tell us, good fellow, how do we get to Rotherwood (скажи нам, славный малый, как нам добраться: «как мы добираемся» до Ротервуда; to get to a place — попадать куда-либо, добираться до какого-либо места; good — хороший; добрый, милый /в вежливом, ироническом или снисходительном обращении/)?"

The Prior quickly stopped the Templar.

"Now, brother," he said to the Templar, "you must not think that you are still in Palestine!"

With a silver coin in his hand, the Prior turned to Wamba instead.

"Tell us, good fellow, how do we get to Rotherwood?"

Wamba told him which road to take to Cedric's house (Вамба сказал ему, какую дорогу выбрать к дому Седрика; to take — брать, хватать; выбирать) and took the coin from the Prior's hand (и взял монету из руки приора).

Wamba told him which road to take to Cedric's house and took the coin from the Prior's hand.

When the riders had disappeared into the forest again, Gurth turned to his friend and said, "If they follow your directions, they will certainly not get to our master's house!"

Wamba grinned. "No, but they may reach Sheffield instead, which is a better place for them."

As the Prior and the Templar rode on in the forest, it soon became too dark for them to see the road clearly. They stopped to ask a man sitting by the side of the road for directions to Cedric's house. The man said that he would show them the way himself, and after a short while they arrived at Rotherwood, the house of Cedric the Saxon.

"Who are you (кто вы)?" Prior Aymer asked the man (приор Эймер спросил у мужчины), whose face was hidden by the hood of his robe (чье лицо было скрыто капюшоном его одеяния; to hide — прятать/ся/; скрывать/ся/)).

"You seem to know this part of the forest well (вы, кажется, знаете эту часть леса хорошо)."

"I am only a poor pilgrim (я просто бедный пилигрим; pilgrim — паломник, пилигрим, странник) who has just returned from the Holy Land (который только что вернулся из святой земли; just — точно, как раз, именно; только что)," the man replied (ответил мужчина), and they went inside together (и они вошли внутрь = в дом вместе) as it started to rain (потому что начался дождь; to rain — идти, литься /о дожде/).
