A large black flag was flying over the highest tower of the Castle of Coningsburgh. Inside, everyone was busy with the funeral arrangements for Athelstane. According to Saxon custom, sheep and oxen were being roasted in the courtyard.

While the crowd of funeral guests ate and drank (пока толпа поминающих: «похоронных гостей/гостей на похоронах» ела и пила; guest — гость, приглашенное лицо), jesters juggled (шуты показывали фокусы; to juggle — показывать фокусы; жонглировать) and priests read out prayers (а священники читали вслух молитвы). Gurth and Wamba quickly joined the guests in the courtyard (Гурт и Вамба быстро присоединись к гостям во внутреннем дворе), and King Richard and Ivanhoe went inside the tower (а король Ричард и Айвенго вошли в башню). The King told Ivanhoe to keep himself hidden from his father (король приказал Айвенго скрываться от своего отца = не показываться своему отцу; to keep — держать, не отдавать; держаться, сохраняться; оставаться /в известном положении, состоянии и т.п./; to hide — прятать/ся/; скрывать/ся/) until he gave the signal (до тех пор, пока он не подаст ему знак). Ivanhoe covered his face (Айвенго закрыл свое лицо) and stayed behind the King (и оставался = держался позади Короля; to stay — останавливаться; делать паузу; оставаться /где-либо/) as they entered the main hall of the castle (когда они вошли в главный холл замка).

Ivanhoe covered his face and stayed behind the King as they entered the main hall of the castle.

Here Cedric sat at the head of the table together with members of other important Saxon families. When he saw the Black Knight enter, Cedric stood up, raised his cup and sadly greeted him. The Knight and Ivanhoe followed Cedric to a small chapel in the castle, where they prayed for the soul of Athelstane.

The Lady Rowena came in with some other guests (леди Ровена вошла /в часовню/ с несколькими другими гостями) and they sang a funeral song together (и они спели похоронную/траурную песню все вместе). Cedric whispered to the guests (Седрик прошептал гостям) that Rowena had been the intended wife of Athelstane (что Ровена была нареченной женой Ательстана; intended — суженый, суженая, нареченный, нареченная). The old Saxon was about to leave the chapel again (старый сакс уже собирался выйти из часовни /снова/), when the Black Knight took his hand (когда Черный рыцарь взял его за руку).

The Lady Rowena came in with some other guests and they sang a funeral song together. Cedric whispered to the guests that Rowena had been the intended wife of Athelstane. The old Saxon was about to leave the chapel again, when the Black Knight took his hand.

"I would like to remind you (мне хотелось бы напомнить тебе; to remind — напоминать, походить; напоминать, делать напоминание)," the Knight said, "that when we parted (что когда мы расстались; to part — разделять, делить на части; расставаться), you promised me a favour (ты пообещал мне об одолжении)."

"Of course, noble Knight (конечно, благородный рыцарь)," said Cedric. "Yet, at this sad moment (и все же, в этот печальный момент) —"

"I'm afraid I don't have much time (я боюсь, что у меня немного времени). You have known me as the Black Knight (ты знал меня под именем Черного рыцаря)," said the Knight, taking off his helmet (сказал рыцарь, снимая свой шлем), "now you may know me as Richard (теперь ты можешь знать меня = узнай же меня под именем Ричарда)!"

"I would like to remind you," the Knight said, "that when we parted, you promised me a favour."

"Of course, noble Knight," said Cedric. "Yet, at this sad moment —"

"I'm afraid I don't have much time. You have known me as the Black Knight," said the Knight, taking off his helmet, "now you may know me as Richard!"

"King Richard (король Ричард)!" exclaimed Cedric, stepping back with surprise (воскликнул Седрик, отступая: «делая шаг» назад от удивления).

"Will you not kneel for your King (разве ты не преклонишь коленей перед твоим королем)?"

"I will never kneel for Norman blood (я никогда не преклоню коленей перед норманнской кровью)," said Cedric.

"Wait, then, until I have shown you (подожди, в таком случае, пока я не покажу = докажу тебе) that I will protect Normans and Saxons equally well (что я буду защищать норманнов и саксов одинаково хорошо)."

"King Richard!" exclaimed Cedric, stepping back with surprise.

"Will you not kneel for your King?"

"I will never kneel for Norman blood," said Cedric.

"Wait, then, until I have shown you that I will protect Normans and Saxons equally well."

"Well spoken, Sir King (хорошо сказано, сэр король)," said the old Saxon. "For I will admit you are king (так как я признаю, что вы король; to admit — допускать, соглашаться), even though I don't like it (даже если мне это не нравится)."
