In the meantime, Rebecca had been taken to a room in the highest tower of Torquilstone. She quickly saw that the room only had one, very large window, and that she had no way of escaping. The door opened behind her, and a tall man dressed in green came in. She held out some of her jewellery to him, hoping that this was what he came for.

"Beautiful flower of Palestine (прекрасный цветок Палестины)," said the outlaw in French (сказал разбойник по-французски), "I have always preferred beauty to jewellery (я всегда предпочитал красоту драгоценностям)."

"You are not an outlaw, but a Norman (вы не разбойник, а норманн)!" cried Rebecca (воскликнула Ревекка; to cry — кричать; восклицать, вскрикнуть).

"And you are so beautiful (а ты настолько прекрасна), one could almost think that you were a witch (можно почти что подумать, что ты колдунья; witch — колдунья, ведьма; чаровница, обворожительная женщина)," said Brian de Bois-Guilbert.

"I cannot trust you, Templar (я не могу доверять тебе, рыцарь храма; to trust — доверять, верить)!"

He hesitated at first, afraid that she might jump if he came closer, but also because he admired how bravely she had jumped up onto the ledge.

"Come down," he said, "and I promise by the earth, the sea and the sky, that I will not harm you."

"I cannot trust you, Templar!"

"I promise by my sword (я обещаю = клянусь своим мечом), my name and my cross (своим именем и своим крестом), I will not harm a hair on your head (я не причиню вреда и волоску на твоей голове = ни один волос не упадет с твоей головы)! I have broken many laws (я нарушил много законов; to break — ломать; нарушить /слово, обещание, закон и т.п./; law — закон), but never my word (но никогда — свое слово). If not yourself, then think of your father (если /не хочешь думать/ о себе самой, тогда подумай о своем отце)!
