'There's no sort of use in knocking (ровно никакой пользы от стука нет; sort — вид, род, сорт; use — употребление, использование; польза, толк),' said the Footman, 'and that for two reasons (и это по двум причинам). And certainly there was a most extraordinary noise going on within (и действительно, совершенно невообразимый шум раздавался внутри; to go on — идти дальше; происходить, случаться) — a constant howling and sneezing (постоянный рев и чихание), and every now and then a great crash (и то и дело /раздавался/ сильный грохот; great — большой, огромный; сильный, интенсивный), as if a dish or kettle had been broken to pieces (словно блюдо или чайник разбивались вдребезги: «на части»).
