Наконец, last but not least — на страницах нашего исследования мы пытались показать, что крестовый поход был синтезом самых разных и самых важных идей и практик средневекового общества, давно существовавших в христианской Европе, — таких, как идеи священной войны, мученичества, искупления грехов, рыцарская идея, а также традиция паломничества и покаянная практика. Один историк справедливо назвал крестовый поход зеркалом всего христианства. Действительно, в крестоносной идеологии наиболее яркое и полное воплощение получило учение католической Церкви, в ней нашла свое отражение система западнохристианского миросозерцания. Вообще жизнеспособность крестоносного движения обеспечивалась прежде всего существованием особой устойчивой системы ценностей, которая никак не могла быть просто религиозным флером, но являлась важной чертой средневекового мировоззрения. Можно считать, что сама идея крестового похода умерла только тогда, когда изменился весь строй религиозного мышления. В заключение повторим еще раз: последнюю точку в истории крестоносного движения поставили не столько победы ислама (военные успехи мамлюков в конце XIII в. или турецкая экспансия позднего Средневековья), сколько Реформация. Но даже и после XVI в., как мы видели, крестоносное движение продолжало существовать — например, в Испании; позже оно также поддерживалось деятельностью военно-рыцарских орденов — прежде всего госпитальеров, которые еще два века боролись против турок в Средиземноморье… Как знать, быть может, в будущем историки обнаружат и более поздние сведения о крестовых проповедях, принятии христианами креста, пожаловании воинам крестовых индульгенций и пр., и смогут рассказать о других, пока еще не известных нам, запоздалых традициях крестовых походов.
