'At any rate I'll never go there again!' said Alice as she picked her way through the wood. 'It's the stupidest tea-party I ever was at in all my life!'

Just as she said this, she noticed that one of the trees had a door leading right into it. 'That's very curious!' she thought. 'But everything's curious today. I think I may as well go in at once.' And in she went.

Once more she found herself in the long hall (снова она очутилась в длинной зале; to find oneself somewhere — оказаться, очутиться где-либо), and close to the little glass table (рядом с небольшим стеклянным столиком). CHAPTER VIII

The Queen's Croquet-Ground

A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden (большой розовый куст рос: «стоял» рядом со входом в сад): the roses growing on it were white (розы, которые росли на нем, были белыми), but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red (но рядом с ним стояли три садовника, которые энергично красили их в красный цвет). Alice thought this a very curious thing (Алиса подумала, что это было очень странно), and she went nearer to watch them (и она подошла поближе, чтобы понаблюдать за ними), and just as she came up to them she heard one of them say (и как раз когда она подошла к ним, она услышала, как один из них сказал), 'Look out now, Five (эй, осторожней, Пятерка; to look out — выглядывать; быть настороже)! 'I couldn't help it (я не виноват: «я ничего не могу поделать»; cannot help — быть не в состоянии воспрепятствовать, помешать чему-либо),' said Five, in a sulky tone (сказал Пятерка мрачным голосом); 'Seven jogged my elbow (Семерка толкнул меня под локоть).'

'You'd better not talk (ты бы лучше не болтал = помалкивал)!' said Five. 'I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded (я слышал, как Королева только вчера сказала, что ты заслужил того, чтобы быть обезглавленным = чтобы тебе отрубили голову; to deserve — заслуживать, быть достойным /чего-либо/; to behead — отрубать голову, казнить)!'

'What for (за что)?' said the one who had spoken first (спросил тот, кто заговорил первым).

'That's none of your business, Two (это совершенно не твое дело, Двойка)!' said Seven.

'Yes, it is his business (да, это его дело)!' said Five, 'and I'll tell him (и я скажу ему, /за что/) — it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions (за то, что он принес кухарке луковицы тюльпанов вместо лука; root — корень).'

'You'd better not talk!' said Five. 'I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!'

'What for?' said the one who had spoken first.

'That's none of your business, Two!' said Seven.

'Yes, it is his business!' said Five, 'and I'll tell him-it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions.'

Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun (Семерка бросил наземь свою кисть и как раз начал /говорить/; to fling — швырнуть) 'Well, of all the unjust things (ну, такой несправедливости: «из всех несправедливых вещей»…)—' when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice (когда его взгляд случайно упал на Алису; to chance — рискнуть; случиться, случайно произойти), as she stood watching them (в то время как та стояла и смотрела на них), and he checked himself suddenly (и он вдруг осекся; to check oneself — остановиться, удержаться, сдержаться): the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low (остальные = двое других также оглянулись, и все они низко поклонились).

Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun 'Well, of all the unjust things—' when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them, and he checked himself suddenly: the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low.

'Would you tell me,' said Alice, a little timidly, 'why you are painting those roses?'

Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two (Пятерка и Семерка ничего не сказали, а взглянули на Двойку). Two began in a low voice (Двойка начал тихим голосом; low — низкий, невысокий; тихий, негромкий), 'Why the fact is, you see, Miss, this here ought to have been a red rose-tree (ну, дело в том, видите ли, мисс, что здесь должен был расти алый розовый куст), and we put a white one in by mistake (а мы посадили здесь белый по ошибке); and if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know (и если бы Королева узнала об этом, она бы приказала отрубить нам головы, знаете ли). The Queen!'
