He pointed to garments; – they were muddy and clotted with gore. I spoke not, and he took me gently by the hand: it was indented with the impress of human nails. He directed my attention to some object against the wall. I looked at it for some minutes: it was a spade. With a shriek I bounded to the table, and grasped the box that lay upon it.
But I could not force it open (но я не мог открыть ее силой: «принудить ее открытой»); and in my tremor, it slipped from my hands, and fell heavily, and burst into pieces (и в моем дрожании = из-за того что я дрожал она выскользнула из моих рук и тяжко упала и разлетелась на куски; to burst – взорваться, разорваться, треснуть); and from it, with a rattling sound, there rolled out some instruments of dental surgery (и из нее, с грохочущим звуком, выкатились наружу какие-то инструменты /для/ зубоврачебного кабинета; to rattle – трещать, грохотать; греметь /посудой, ключами и т. п./; дребезжать), intermingled with thirty-two small, white and ivory-looking substances (перемешанные с тридцатью двумя маленькими, белыми и похожими на слоновую кость кусочками; substance – субстанция, материя; суть, содержание; плотность) that were scattered to and fro about the floor (которые рассыпались: «были рассыпаны» туда и сюда по полу).

The Fall of the House of Usher

De Beranger (Беранже).
During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year (в течение целого унылого, темного и беззвучного дня осенней порой года), when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens (когда тучи висели угнетающе низко в небесах), I had been passing alone, on horseback (я проезжал один, верхом: «на лошадиной спине»; horse – лошадь; back – спина; задняя часть чего-либо), through a singularly dreary tract of country (по исключительно безотрадной деревенской дороге; country – страна, край, «загород», деревня); and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on (и наконец оказался: «нашел себя», когда тени вечера приблизились = пала вечерняя тень; to draw on – наступать, близиться от to draw – тянуть), within view of the melancholy House of Usher (в виду меланхоличного = унылого Дома Ашеров).

I know not how it was (я не знаю, как это было = в чем дело) – but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit (но с первым взглядом на это здание чувство невыносимого уныния охватило мою душу). I say insufferable (я говорю – невыносимой); for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment (ибо это ощущение было необлегчено = не было облегчено никаким таким полуприятным, потому что поэтическим, чувством; to relieve – облегчать; un– отрицательная приставка), with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible (с которым разум обычно воспринимает даже суровейшие природные картины запустелого или ужасного; to receive – получать).

I looked upon the scene before me (я смотрел на сцену = картину, /открывавшуюся/ передо мной) – upon the mere house (на один лишь дом; mere – простой; один лишь), and the simple landscape features of the domain (и на простые пейзажные черты имения = на черты пейзажа, на пейзаж) – upon the bleak walls (на бесцветные стены; bleak – открытый, не защищенный от ветра; унылый, гнетущий, безрадостный) – upon the vacant eye-like windows (на похожие на отсутствующий взгляд: «глаз» окна; – like – похожий на что-либо) – upon a few rank sedges (на разросшуюся осоку; a few – несколько) – and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees (и на несколько белых стволов сгнивших деревьев; to decay – прийти в упадок) – with an utter depression of soul (с крайней подавленностью души) which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly (которую я не могу сравнить ни с каким земным ощущением более верно) than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium (нежели с состоянием проснувшегося опиомана: «после-сон забулдыги на опиуме») – the bitter lapse into everyday life (горькое падение в каждодневную = обычную жизнь) – the hideous dropping off of the reveller upon opium (с отвратительным похмельем опиомана; to drop off – уходить; оставлять что-либо) – the bitter lapse into everyday life (с горьким падением в повседневную жизнь) – the hideous dropping off of the veil (с отвратительным ниспаданием занавеса).

There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart (была некая холодность, внезапная слабость, тошнота сердца) – an unredeemed dreariness of thought (неискупленное = ничем не преодоленное уныние мысли) which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime (которую никакое понукание воображения не могло превратить: «вымучить» во что-либо возвышенное; can – мочь). What was it – I paused to think (что же это было – приостановился я, чтобы подумать) – what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher (что же это было, что так выбило меня из колеи при созерцании Дома Ашеров; to unnerve – выбить из колеи: «разнервировать»)? It was a mystery all insoluble (это была загадка совершенно неразрешимая); nor could I grapple with the shadowy fancies that crowded upon me as I pondered (и я не мог бороться с призрачными фантазиями, которые охватили меня, пока я размышлял; crowd – толпа; to crowd – столпиться; to crowd upon – нахлынуть, охватить).
