The novel begins in the suburb of Kyiv. On Christmas a girl is born in the family of a village teacher. Her name is Nadia. Due to labour complication, her mother becomes mute. The girl grows offish, strange. For this reason villagers call to her "witch". A casual acquaintance with an artist from Kyiv, Nestor by name, reveals Nadia's amazing talent: she takes her Christmas dream to a blank canvas, making this her very first artistic creation.Despite her parents' ban, Nadia runs away to Kyiv to study the craft of painting and then enters the Art Academy of Krakow. There she becomes a well known European artist, but each new success only alienates her from her own self - in truth, leads to her demise. Nadia loses touch with small and large homeland, ignoring her family. This leads to her loss of talent and her beloved. But, familiar tunes persist in Nadia's heart.
