Then his eyes chanced upon Lit-lit.

"Lit-lit — well, she is Lit-lit,"(Лит-Лит — ну, это Лит-Лит) was the fashion in which he despairingly described her (/именно/ в такой форме он с безысходностью описывал ее; fashion — мода, стиль; манера; despair — отчаяние; безнадежность) to his chief clerk, Alexander McLean (своему старшему клерку Александру Маклину; chief — главный; старший).
