Ruthra sat across from him and tapped his fingers on his knee, suggesting that he was in a hurry, but at the same time realizing the futility of doing so with his grandfather, who was suffering from the syndrome of old age, nostalgia, and loneliness. It was vital for the old fighter to be useful in some way and to tell an understanding person about the times of his former fighting glory.

– The Soviet Forces Group in Germany was established after the victory of the USSR and the anti-Hitler coalition in the Great Patriotic War and the unconditional surrender of Germany. The main task of the Group of Forces was to ensure the defense of the western borders of the USSR from external threats and to crush any enemy. The Group of Forces was equipped with the most advanced and modern combat equipment and weapons, including nuclear weapons. In the GSVG, readiness for war was always constant and was checked around the clock.

Rutra stopped rubbing his knee and prepared to listen to a thorough story, reassuring himself that the old fighter would not waste his time in such a difficult situation, although he knew that Alexander Ivanovich had such a nature: if he told about something, he told very thoroughly, in detail, and did not like to be interrupted, even if he realized that the listener knew some details of the story. So this time Alexander Ivanovich could not deny himself the pleasure of a heartfelt story.

After half an hour of undoubtedly interesting storytelling, he heard.

– That's the story.

Alexander Ivanovich was silent, Rutra was also silent, it was clear that for Ivanovich the loss of the USSR was very hard to bear.

– What exactly were you interested in there? – Ivanovich asked.

– What was underneath Brocken Mountain.

– Hmm, I knew it. Otherwise, why would you want to be in the GVH? Mount Brocken is one of the highest points in eastern Germany, located in the Harz mountain range. This mountain is interesting not only in geographical sense. In the old days the great German poets and writers Heine and Goethe presented the beauty and mystical power of Brocken in all colors. At the beginning of the 1930s a mast for a radio transmitter was built on the mountain. In 1945 the American aviation bombed the objects on Brocken, but tried not to touch the radio mast. After the arrival of American troops, a group of Werewolfs managed to sabotage the mast and transmitter on April 30, 1945. On April 27, 1947, the Americans left Brocken, liberating the territory according to the terms of the Yalta Treaty. The mountain was of great strategic importance during the socialist times. Important radio and television broadcasting facilities were located there, as well as the facilities of the SSVG, the GDR border guards and the GDR State Security Service – the Stasi. Access to Brocken was open until August 1961, and then a restricted zone was declared under the protection of the 7th Border Guard Company stationed in Schirk, near Mount Brocken. One platoon lived on Brocken in the former premises of the railway station. The Stasi RER post on Brocken had the call sign Urian, and the 82 ORTBR had the call sign Yenisei. The last of our soldiers left Brocken on March 30, 1994. Opposite, to the south on Wurmberg Mountain, there was a station of American troops on a tower 81 meters high.

In Germany, lovers of the supernatural in early May listen to news from a small town where those who call themselves real witches gather. They are preparing for Walpurgis Night. Two hundred witches live in the town of St. Andreasverg at the foot of the legendary Brocken Mountain. On Walpurgis Night on May 1, they show their true colors. They prepare for the coven in many houses and right in the market square, even in the kindergarten. I had a very good friend there, Ingrid Wibenaisser, the town's senior witch. She worked as a kindergarten teacher. The witches of Brocken Mountain were famous throughout Europe for their knowledge and particularly indomitable temper. According to popular belief, witches from all over Europe came here to exchange experiences. The Holy Inquisition burned witches at the stake until the middle of the XVIII century, but could not get rid of this leaping and squealing tribe of women. In German witchcraft doctrine, Walpurgis Night is the most significant of the pagan festivals, dedicated to fertility, and one of the main sabbats celebrated by witches. The name Walpurgis Night is associated with the name of St. Walpurgis, a Wimburn nun who came to Germany in 748 to found a convent. This same nun was extremely popular, and she was soon venerated as a saint. In the Roman list of saints, her day is May 1.
