I held them in every light. I turned them in every attitude. I surveyed their characteristics. I dwelt upon their peculiarities. I pondered upon their conformation. I mused upon the alteration in their nature. I shuddered as I assigned to them in imagination a sensitive and sentient power, and even when unassisted by the lips, a capability of moral expression.

Of Mademoiselle Sallé it has been well said (о мадемуазель Салле[7] было хорошо сказано = говорили), “Que tous ses pas étaient des sentiments («что все ее шаги были – чувства»; фр.) ,” and of Berenice I more seriously believed que toutes ses dents étaient des idées (а о Беренике я /еще/ более серьезно верил, «что все ее зубы были – мысли»; фр.). Des idées! – ah here was the idiotic thought that destroyed me (мысли! – ах, вот и была глупейшая мысль, которая погубила меня; to destroy – разрушить; погубить)! Des idées! – ah therefore it was that I coveted them so madly (мысли! – ах, поэтому было так, что я алкал их столь безумно)! I felt that their possession could alone ever restore me to peace (я чувствовал, что их обладание = обладание ими одно могло когда-либо вернуть меня к покою; to restore – восстановить, реставрировать; вернуть), in giving me back to reason (отдав меня назад рассудку).

And the evening closed in upon me thus (и вечер обволок меня так; to close in – обволакивать; наступать, приближаться; to close – закрывать; приближаться) – and then the darkness came, and tarried, and went (и затем тьма пришла, и побыла, и ушла; to tarry – медлить; пребывать) – and the day again dawned (и дневной свет вновь забрезжил) – and the mists of a second night were now gathering around (и туманы другой ночи теперь собирались вокруг) – and still I sat motionless in that solitary room (и все еще я сидел, неподвижный, в той отшельнической комнате) – and still I sat buried in meditation (и все еще я сидел, погруженный в размышления; to bury – зарывать, закапывать; хоронить) – and still the phantasma of the teeth maintained its terrible ascendancy (и все еще видение зубов сохраняло свою ужасную власть; ascendancy – власть, влияние, господство), as, with the most vivid hideous distinctness (пока, с живейшей, отвратительной ясностью), it floated about amid the changing lights and shadows of the chamber (оно плавало = носилось вокруг среди меняющихся огней и теней комнаты; light – свет).

At length there broke in upon my dreams a cry as of horror and dismay (наконец ворвался в мои мечтания крик, будто бы от ужаса и смятения; to break in – ворваться, вломиться; to break – ломать); and thereunto, after a pause, succeeded the sound of troubled voices (и к тому же, после паузы = немного погодя, последовал звук беспокойных голосов), intermingled with many low moanings of sorrow or of pain (смешанный с многочисленными стенаниями печали или боли). I arose from my seat (я вскочил со своего кресла: «сидения»; to arise – подниматься), and throwing open one of the doors of the library (и, распахнув одну из дверей библиотеки; to throw open – распахнуть: «кинуть открытым»), saw standing out in the ante-chamber a servant maiden, all in tears (увидел стоявшую снаружи, в передней, девушку-горничную, всю в слезах; servant – слуга; maiden – девица; горничная), who told me that Berenice was – no more (которая сказала мне, что Береника – не была больше = что ее не было больше; no more – больше не)! She had been seized with epilepsy in the early morning (она была охвачена эпилептическим припадком ранним утром), and now, at the closing in of the night, the grave was ready for its tenant (а теперь, при приближении ночи, могила была готова для своей жилицы; closing in – приближение, от to close in – приближаться), and all the preparations for the burial were completed (и все приготовления к погребению были завершены).

I found myself sitting in the library (я обнаружил себя сидящим в библиотеке), and again sitting there alone (и снова сидящим там в одиночестве). It seemed that I had newly awakened from a confused and exciting dream (казалось, что я только что очнулся от смутного и будоражащего сна). I knew that it was now midnight (я знал, что теперь полночь), and I was well aware (и я хорошо знал: «был хорошо осведомлен»), that since the setting of the sun, Berenice had been interred (что с захода солнца Береника была погребена). But of that dreary period which intervened (но о том жутком времени, которое было между /погребением и моим пробуждением/; to intervene – вмешиваться; вклиниваться; вставать между; находиться между) I had no positive, at least no definite comprehension (у меня не было никакого положительного, по крайней мере – никакого определенного понимания). Yet its memory was replete with horror (и все же воспоминание о нем: «его воспоминание» было исполнено ужаса) – horror more horrible from being vague (ужас /еще/ более ужасный от того, что был туманным), and terror more terrible from ambiguity (и кошмар /еще/ более кошмарный из-за неясности; ambiguous – двусмысленный; сомнительный; неопределенный, неясный).
