Центральноамериканская индейская цивилизация ацтеков по праву занимает свое законное место в ряду выдающихся культур, созданных человечеством на протяжении всей его истории. Но это была культура, в которой, по словам одного из современных исследователей, воплотились одновременно «мечта и кошмар». С одной стороны, древние ацтеки строили грандиозные и величественные храмы и пирамиды, опирались в хронологических и астрологических расчетах на поразивший европейцев своей точностью календарь, но с другой — использовали отвратительную практику кровавых человеческих жертвоприношений. Для верной и объективной оценки этого общества надо понять его духовную среду, его мировоззрение. Именно поэтому религиозно-мифологические аспекты представляют особый интерес.
