Nam-Bok paused to pick away a sliver of salmon lodged between his teeth, and the men and women, with idle hands and heads craned forward, waited.

"It was a canoe (это было каноэ), a big canoe (большое каноэ). If all the canoes I have ever seen were made into one canoe (если бы из всех каноэ, которые я когда-либо видел, сделали одно каноэ), it would not be so large (оно не было бы таким большим)."

There were exclamations of doubt (были = раздались восклицания сомнения), and Koogah, whose years were many, shook his head (а Куга, которому было много лет, покачал головой).

"Hold, O Nam-Bok (погоди, о Нам-Бок)!" Opee-Kwan broke in (перебил Опи-Кван; to break in — вмешаться /в разговор и т. п./; прервать /разговор/). "What manner of men were they (какие люди это были)? — big men (великаны)?"

"Nay, mere men like you and me (нет, простые люди, как ты и я)."

"Did the big canoe come fast (большое каноэ шло быстро)?"

"Ay (да)."

"The sides were tall (борта были высокие), the men short (/а/ люди невысокие)." Opee-Kwan stated the premises with conviction (уверенно: «с убеждением» сформулировал Опи-Кван вышеизложенное; premises — вышеизложенное, вышеуказанное; to state — формулировать, излагать). "And did these men dip with long paddles (и эти люди гребли длинными веслами)?"

Nam-Bok grinned (Нам-Бок ухмыльнулся). "There were no paddles (не было весел)," he said.

"Hold, O Nam-Bok!" Opee-Kwan broke in. "What manner of men were they? — big men?"

"Nay, mere men like you and me."

"Did the big canoe come fast?"

"Ay."

"The sides were tall, the men short." Opee-Kwan stated the premises with conviction. "And did these men dip with long paddles?"

Nam-Bok grinned. "There were no paddles," he said.

Mouths remained open (рты остались открытыми), and a long silence dropped down (и настала долгая тишина; to drop — валить; падать, опускаться). Opee-Kwan borrowed Koogah's pipe for a couple of contemplative sucks (Опи-Кван позаимствовал трубку Куги на пару задумчивых затяжек; to suck — всасывать). "The south wind was behind (южный ветер был позади = дул в спину)," Nam-Bok explained (пояснил Нам-Бок).

"But the wind-drift is slow (но дрейф по ветру медленный = но дрейфовать по ветру медленно)."

Mouths remained open, and a long silence dropped down. Opee-Kwan borrowed Koogah's pipe for a couple of contemplative sucks. One of the younger women giggled nervously and drew upon herself angry eyes.

"There were no paddles?" Opee-Kwan asked softly, returning the pipe.

"The south wind was behind," Nam-Bok explained.

"But the wind-drift is slow."

"The schooner had wings — thus (у шхуны были крылья — вот такие; thus — так, таким образом)." He sketched a diagram of masts and sails in the sand (он набросал на песке схему мачт и парусов), and the men crowded around and studied it (и мужчины столпились вокруг и рассматривали ее). "The schooner had wings — thus." He sketched a diagram of masts and sails in the sand, and the men crowded around and studied it. Bask-Wah-Wan scolded and struggled, but was blown down the beach for a score of feet and left breathless and stranded in a heap of driftwood. The men uttered sage grunts of comprehension, but Koogah suddenly tossed back his hoary head.

"Ho! Ho (хо-хо)!" he laughed (засмеялся он). "A foolish thing (глупость), this big canoe (это большое каноэ)! A most foolish thing (большая глупость)! The plaything of the wind (игрушка ветра)! Wheresoever the wind goes, it goes too (куда бы ни дул ветер, оно поплывет туда же). No man who journeys therein may name the landing beach (ни один человек, который путешествует в ней, не может указать берег высадки), for always he goes with the wind (ибо он всегда плывет по ветру), and the wind goes everywhere (а ветер движется во все стороны), but no man knows where (но никто не знает куда)."

"It is so (это так)," Opee-Kwan supplemented gravely (рассудительно добавил Опи-Кван). "With the wind the going is easy (по ветру плыть легко), but against the wind a man striveth hard (но против ветра человек прилагает большие усилия; to strive — бороться, прилагать усилия); and for that they had no paddles (а поскольку у них не было весел) these men on the big canoe did not strive at all (эти люди на большом каноэ совсем не прилагали усилий)."
