For Halen, it’s a reflection of her shadow, her turmoil, and her battle for the will to live.
Kallum says in his final chapter: “Like the gnarled trees of the marsh, without her, I would have become one of them, twisted and decrepit, trapped in the seventh circle of hell by my own violence.”
For Kallum, the symbolism has always been more clear. He confessed in book one his contemplation of this act before he found Halen, and he felt a connection to Dante, as in much the same way Dante traversed the circles of hell to save his beloved, Kallum traversed through his personal and metaphorical hell to save his.

Lastly, I have never faced a more challenging character arc than Professor Kallum Locke. From taking him from the start as a potential villain, to a hero, to a villain, and then an antihero, all while trying to make us fall further in love with him…writing him is as exhausting as reading him sometimes, I promise. But I truly hope that you have fallen in love with Kallum, and Halen, and their story.
I could probably write a whole other book on just the research and references, but no one wants that ha (I know I get wordy; I spend most of my days yelling at walls for this reason; I wish that was a joke), and at some point, it’s time to leave Hollow’s Row (for my sanity; I wish this was a joke also), but I did leave a little place open for the continuation of their story…if and when my brain has recovered enough to embark on that project. There is the vague mention of the Acolyte, and resurrecting the Harbinger. This was a compromise I had to make with Kallum in order to be allowed to finish the book.
Again, thank you, so much, for reading their story, and for reading my note, and for taking the journey with me through the book of my heart. You will never know what it means to me, from the bottom of my dark, dark heart.
