Valcarion, an orphan from the age of three, is well acquainted with the deep-cutting consequences of the war that has been ravaging his world. Unknown to Valcarion, the only other dangerously powerful blade is held by none other than the malevolent king, Grostine, who leads the battle hardened Vilantian Army in a campaign of darkness. When his brother leaves to join the ranks of soldiers willing to fight - and die if need be - for the sake of freedom, Valcarion is forced to say goodbye. Just when the young wielder supposes things couldn't become any worse, Valcarion learns that he has been under the watchful eye of a mysterious old man who knows it is no ordinary sword that he wields. As the enemy closes in on Valcarion's homeland of Arvis, he is given no choice but to trust the stranger. When Valcarion and his newfound tutor stow away on an enemy ship, Valcarion begins to learn just how difficult and significant a journey he has ahead of him. On the nearly month-long voyage Valcarion is taught the skills of a wielder; skills that may be able to counteract the shadow that is enveloping his world. More importantly, Valcarion learns that young as he may be, he will have to choose as thousands of soldiers before him had chosen - to sacrifice everything for the greater good of the world. Opposing and defeating Grostine in a climatic battle with unforeseen twists, finding his brother, mastering his newfound abilities, joining forces with a group of freedom fighters known as The Mide, and surviving swarms of enemies are some of the challenges that face the young wielder. Though loyal friends join his cause along the way, in the end it is Valcarion who has to decide just much he is truly willing to sacrifice.
