Rhett Sanders begins each day with a game, jotting down the names of five random people who were mentioned in articles in the Houston Chronicle. The game continues when he arrives at his office where he checks the names against his company database of people who had participated in surveys he conducted in the past-hoping for a match. One morning Rhett writes down the name of Bobby Joe Milstead, a man killed by local police in an alleged drug bust. The name is a match. When he reviews Bobby Joe's information, Rhett is convinced the police have a case of mistaken identity. Driven by curiosity and his desire to do the right thing, Rhett, his girlfriend, Toni Darnell, and his best friend and criminal attorney, Chris Beck, place their lives in peril as they uncover a plot of corruption and murder.
