Ever wondered what is was like to grow up gay in Western Sydney, an area several decades ago renowned for not accepting anything more different than black jeans and an Iron Maiden T-shirt; to fall in love for the very first time and make the gorgeous mistake of not having him pass a psych test, and end up trapped in a domestically violent relationship? Twisted Harmony (The Journey of Mr Gay Sydney) is an emotional roller coaster exploring the life of a young gay man struggling with self-identity and sexuality, and coming out of it the other end with the inner strength to overcome any obstacle. Meet Shane, an impressionable young man growing up in suburban Sydney, destined to remain the three things he can not stand: a fashion disaster, a nobody, and a virgin. All this changes as he befriends a group of misfits at Uni, and they all embark on discovering the Sydney gay scene, with all it's fabulous somebodies, great dance music and unique style. At the peak of partying six nights a week, his best girlfriend gets engaged to a gay man, becomes a sex worker, and Shane finds himself shining in the spotlight of life full of drag Queens, drama Queens and drugs. A nocturnal playground where everyone had a dual identity. What more could he possible want? With so many four letter words to choose from, he chose the most difficult, love. In a dramatic twist so warped it could only have ended with one stalker and one true love, Shane gave it all up to settle down in quaint old London town with a beautifully handsome English lad. His best girlfriend gave up sex work and moved over as well, though she wasn't quite the friend he had in mind. His in-laws were proof that not everyone who should be locked up actually is, and Shane clung to the only thing he believed in, as the reality of his true love hit him, repeatedly. Realising Shane had few friends in London, or good memories, he found creative ways to survive till he could afford to return to Sydney, crushed and only a shell of the man who left only three years earlier. With all his friends either gone, or too selfish to bother with, Shane changed everything he didn't like about himself, creating his own dual identity from battered house-husband to an independent man, sealing it by legally changing his name to Luke. Complementing the internal transformation, and after some time at the gym, he rebuilt his confidence dancing behind a drag Queen who mimed like a blow-up doll, and alongside another male dancer who was more plastic than a six foot dildo. Left with one ex-boyfriend still stalking him, and the other using witchcraft and constantly wishing he was dead, Luke (the gay guy formerly known as Shane) eventually comes to terms with himself and becomes the man who would win Mr Gay Sydney. Set in the 1980' through to the naughties, Twisted Harmony (The Journey of Mr Gay Sydney) is a light hearted story of a young man discovering life, love, and sexual diversity.
