It was the green heart of the canyon, where the walls swerved back from the rigid plan and relieved their harshness of line by making a little sheltered nook and filling it to the brim with sweetness and roundness and softness. Here all things rested. Even the narrow stream ceased its turbulent down-rush long enough to form a quiet pool. Knee-deep in the water, with drooping head and half-shut eyes, drowsed a red-coated, many-antlered buck.

On one side (на одной стороне), beginning at the very lip of the pool (начинавшейся у самого края заводи; the very – тот самый; lip – край), was a tiny meadow (был маленький луг; tiny – очень маленький, крошечный), a cool (прохладная; cool – прохладный, свежий), resilient surface of green (упругая поверхность зелени; resilient – упругий, эластичный) that extended to the base of the frowning wall (которая простиралась до подножья хмурых скал; to frown – хмуриться). Beyond the pool (на другом берегу = по ту сторону озера) a gentle slope of earth ran up and up (пологий склон берега = земли поднимался вверх и вверх; to run up – подниматься) to meet the opposing wall (и упирался в противоположную стеу; to meet – встречать; соприкасаться). Fine grass covered the slope (прекрасная трава покрывала склон; fine – хороший, прекрасный) – grass that was spangled with flowers (трава, которая была усеяна цветами; to spangle – блестеть, сверкать; перен. усеивать, усыпать), with here and there patches of color (тут и там цветными пятнами; patch – клочок, лоскут; пятно неправильной формы), orange (оранжевыми) and purple (пурпурными) and golden (золотыми). Below, the canyon was shut in (ниже каньон был загорожен; to shut in – загораживать; защемлять). There was no view (вида не было). The walls leaned together abruptly (скалы отвесно клонились друг к другу) and the canyon ended in a chaos of rocks (и каньон заканчивался хаосом камней; to end in smth. – кончаться чем-либо), moss-covered (покрытых мхом) and hidden by a green screen of vines (и скрытых за зеленым щитом винограда; vine – виноградная лоза) and creepers (ползучих растений; to creep – ползать) and boughs of trees (и ветвей деревьев). Up the canyon rose far hills and peaks (выше каньона поднимались холмы и горы; peak – пик, остроконечная вершина), the big foot-hills (широкие предгорья; big – большой; широкий), pine-covered and remote (поросшие соснами и труднодоступные; remote – отдаленный; труднодоступный). And far beyond (и далеко за /каньоном/; beyond – за, по ту сторону), like clouds upon the border of the sky (как облака на горизонте: «на краю неба»; border – граница, край), towered minarets of white (возвышались белоснежные минареты), where the Sierra’s eternal snows (где вечные снега Сьерры) flashed austerely the blazes of the sun (сурово отражали вспышки солнца; to flash – сверкать; давать отблески, отражать; austere – строгий, суровый).

Fine grass covered the slope – grass that was spangled with flowers, with here and there patches of color, orange and purple and golden. Below, the canyon was shut in. There was no view. The walls leaned together abruptly and the canyon ended in a chaos of rocks, moss-covered and hidden by a green screen of vines and creepers and boughs of trees. Up the canyon rose far hills and peaks, the big foot-hills, pine-covered and remote. And far beyond, like clouds upon the border of the sky, towered minarets of white, where the Sierra’s eternal snows flashed austerely the blazes of the sun.

There was no dust in the canyon (пыли не было в этом каньоне). The leaves and flowers were clean and virginal (листья и цветы были чисты и девственны). The grass was young velvet (трава была /словно/ новый бархат; young – молодой; новый). Over the pool (над озером) three cottonwoods sent their snowy fluffs fluttering down the quiet air (три тополя посылали снежный пух развеваться по тихому воздуху; to send – посылать; приводить в какое-либо состояние; направлять /что-либо куда-либо/ с силой; to flutter – трепетать; развеваться). On the slope the blossoms of the wine-wooded manzanita filled the air with springtime odors (на склоне цветки обвитой виноградом толокнянки наполняли воздух весенними ароматами; springtime – весна, весенняя пора), while the leaves (в то время как листья), wise with experience (умудренные опытом), were already beginning their vertical twist against the coming aridity of summer (уже начинали свое вертикальное вывертывание = поворачивались вертикально против грядущей летней засухи = стремясь обезопасить себя от засухи; to twist – крутить; скручивать/ся/; изгибаться; twist – изгиб, поворот; скручивание). In the open spaces on the slope (на открытых пространствах склона), beyond the farthest shadow-reach of the manzanita (за пределами самой далекой тени толокнянки; reach – предел досягаемости), poised the mariposa lilies (парили лилии; to poise – висеть в воздухе, парить; mariposa lily – калохортус), like so many flights of jewelled moths (как множество стаек украшенных мотыльков; flight – полет; стая; to jewel – украшать драгоценными камнями) suddenly arrested (внезапно остановленных; to arrest – останавливать) and on the verge of trembling into flight again (и готовых затрепетать в полете снова; on the verge of – на грани чего-либо). Here and there that woods harlequin, the madrone (тут и там этот лесной арлекин, земляничник; harlequin – арлекин, шут; madrone – земляничное дерево, земляничник), permitting itself to be caught in the act of changing its pea-green trunk to madder-red (позволяющий себе быть пойманным = позволяющий поймать себя во время смены его горохово-зеленого стебля на мареново-красный; to permit – позволять, разрешать), breathed its fragrance into the air from great clusters of waxen bells (выдыхал свой аромат в воздух из огромных гроздьев восковых колокольчиков; fragrance – аромат, cluster – кисть, пучок, гроздь). Creamy white were these bells (кремово-белыми были эти колокольчики), shaped like lilies-of-the-valley (имеющие форму ландышей; shape – форма; to shape – придавать форму), with the sweetness of perfume that is of the springtime (со сладостью аромата, присущего весне).
