The reader is introduced to the aircrew of a Lancaster Bomber involved in the many bombing raids over Germany and Italy. It follows the journey of seven young men, from their raw recruit beginnings, to the stage where they become a close-knit war machine. Along the way the reader will experience intrigue, romance, drama, danger and anxiety. The further they venture into the journey, the more thought is given to the young men, some still in their teens, who have failed to return from similar bombing raids. Most readers will be familiar with people who have gone through experiences like this: whether it is a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, a second generation relation or a friend. However, only those closely associated with the crew can really appreciate the hurt and the pain associated with the frequent occurrences of a bomber being lost on a mission.
