A dark secret is about to be revealed that threatens to destroy the lives of five prominent individuals in American society: Giles Courtland, a wealthy and powerful, international banker from an old eastern establishment family; Elizabeth Lowell, another wealthy eastern establishment blue-blood who may soon be the First Lady of the United States; Gordon Williams, a Black television evangelist who has built a multimillion dollar religious empire; Erica Hastings, a nationally-famous psychologist and author of self-help books; and Bodhi Forrester, a controversial author and political science professor at a major American university. These individuals dropped out of society in the 1960s, like many young people, and rejected the mainstream ideals of the American way of life. Their lives converged in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco in the mid-60s and they became connected by a new vision of the good life, and exploring new ways of thinkingand feeling. An ideal of peace and brotherly love was their creed. They began to question the injustices and hypocrisy of American society with the painful tragedy of the Vietnam War, and the discrimination against blacks and minorities who were denied the American dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
