The summer of 1972, before I turned nine, danger began knocking on doors all over China. Ling lives a comfortable life with her parents in Wuhan. But when Comrade Li, one of Mao's political officers, moves into a room in their apartment, things begin to change for the worse. Ling's secure, happy world gradually beings to fall apart and Ling fears for the safety of her neighbours, and soon for herself and her family.
