Mencius, also known as Meng Ke, was born in the State of Zou (now the city of Zoucheng, Shandong province). He was born about 385 BC, and died in 300 BC. Mencius was the outstanding thinker and educator in Warring States period. He inherited and developed the idea of Confucius and became the most authoritative representative of Confucianism in the Warring States period. In feudal society, Mencius was regarded as the second saint, known as the "Sub-Sage", just behind Confucius.
