Based on his 30 years of experience, the author describes well- proved methods of IR-, UV- and fluorescence spectroscopy for the characterisation of hydrocarbons in the environment. Numerous examples ranging from trace analysis to the analysis of 'oil phases' help with identifying hydrocarbons and with discriminating between natural and anthropogenic sources.
