Federal prosecutor Mickey Crane finds himself on the other side of the courtroom when he testifies as an alibi witness on behalf of his former girlfriend Darlene Turner. Turner is charged with the cold-case murder of magazine publisher Johnny Reed that occurred on July 4, 1976 in California. Crane testifies that he proposed to Turner in Michigan on that date. Despite Crane's testimony, the evidence against Turner is overwhelming. The prosecution has an eye-witness, the murder weapon, and a confession. The defense is impeded by Turner's pugilistic dementia, which will make it difficult, if not impossible, for her to testify. The situation grows desperate when the prosecution threatens to charge Crane with perjury and a newly discovered witness-who can corroborate Crane's testimony-is murdered.
