The plot focuses on Moon and Birdboot, two theatre critics. Both of them are watching a ludicrous setup of a country house murder mystery. The play they are watching is presented in the style of whodunit. While watching the play, coincidentally, they are also involved in certain actions which cause a number of events which are similar to the play they are watching. Tom Stoppard was also a Bristol theatre critic. He has drawn "The Real Inspector Hound" on the basis of his own experiences as a critic. The play was initially named "The Stand-ins" and later "The Critics."The play presents a parody of a stereotypical parlor mystery written in the style of Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap." It is also the parody of the critics who are watching the play.
