When the fisherman's daughter discovers that her mother has faded away after eating so many books she dreams she sees her fly across the sky toward the elusive lighthouse. Packing only empty pages she sets out on a journey to find the lighthouse and bring her mother home. Along the way she records the stories given to her during her childhood by her mother. She also meets many interesting characters on her journey, some giving her hope and advice while others, such as the cave people, are trying to dissuade her from her search. The daughter faces many challenges and discoveries on her quest leading to a great sacrifice and ultimate surrender.
