At the beginning of 1944 the German High Command is convinced that invasion is imminent. Conversely, the Allies are aware Hitler is hell-bent on discovering where and when the future landings will take place and are equally determined to protect this priceless information. They know the invasion plan is hugely ambitious and any prior advantage gained by the Germans could mean the difference between success and failure. To counteract the threat the British concoct an astounding military deception codenamed Operation Bodyguard. Remarkable in its deviousness Bodyguard is heavily dependant on the code-breakers of Station X at Bletchley Park. The work at Bletchley is arguably the greatest secret of the war hence Eisenhower is alarmed to learn that German intelligence has expressed an interest about the site. The situation deteriorates and fearing that both the Deception Plan and Station X are at risk Eisenhower appoints Jack Hathway to stop the rot at all costs. Considering the unprecedented power associated with the appointment, the move is a surprising gamble given the abrasive MI5 Major's chequered history. In the weeks ahead, Hathway together with a loosely connected group of men and women become embroiled in the worsening state of affairs. The group includes a WREN, a nurse, a farmer's daughter and a grieving father. Finally, on the night of D-Day itself an officer in the British Paras is required to assume responsibilities far beyond his rank. Though few in number the group's collective influence on the D-Day operation will be profound. It is a time when these apparently unremarkable individuals will each feel the Burden of Deceit. Not all will emerge triumphant.
