In the opening of the play we are introduced to Count Lodovico. He is banished from Rome on the charges of debauchery and murder. However, his friends come forward to help him and they promise that they will do something for the repeal of his sentence. The Duke of Brachiano develops a very violent passion for Vittoria Corombona. She is the daughter of a noble, but now her Venetian family is impoverished. The Duke loves her although they are both married to other people.
