When the police break into Joe Creeney's Liverpool house, his dead wife is hanging by a rope form the banisters and Joe is walking away holding the ladder. Lorraine Creeney has been dead just seconds, and there is nobody else in the house, yet Joe's sister, Caroline Spackman, is convinced her brother is innocent. Amateur PI Jack Scott is called in by solicitor Stephanie Grey.
